This attractive, converted paper mill makes an ideal couple’s escape. Set down a winding country track amidst peaceful woodland, it is the ultimate rural bolthole. The countryside around the cottage is beautifully unspoilt and it sits within the lovely Derwent Valley. Quiet leafy trails lead from the doorstep out into the countryside and just half a mile away, walkers can join the famous coast-to-coast Derwent Walk. Despite its peaceful setting, it is just 12 miles from the vibrant city of Newcastle should you fancy a bit of shopping therapy or a bit of nightlife, and 16 miles from the historic cathedral city of Durham. Other attractions in the area include the Beamish Museum around 10 miles away and the National Trust-run Gibside Estate 5 miles away. Access to the cottage is via half a mile of unpaved track shared with the owners who live in a property some 50 metres away.
This one-bedroom cottage is full of character and charm both inside and out and has been beautifully renovated with careful attention to detail. It is a very private and tranquil location with only one near neighbour. Inside, guests will find a welcoming and homely open-plan living space. There are exposed beams and wooden floors, and the focal point of the room is the cosy wood burner to one end surrounded by lounge chairs – an ideal spot for cosying up in the evening. Here a door opens to the lovely conservatory with a feature exposed-stone wall and the pretty garden beyond. To the other side is a bright kitchen and dining area with a stable door. Upstairs, guests will find a spacious, king-size bedroom with an en-suite bathroom featuring a large walk-in shower and double-ended bath for when you want an indulgent soak.
The small conservatory opens from the living area and is set up with several easy chairs and a coffee table. It is ideal for making the most of the warmth and relaxing with a good book or your morning paper. Beyond this is a sheltered patio and garden area set with an outside table and chairs. This is a beautifully peaceful spot where you’ll be able to listen to the birds and relax in the open air. The garden is a haven for wildlife and, on occasion, you might look out and see a deer passing through.
